And the award goes to...
At the end of the recital we have a formal certificate presentation to our performers & 2 drawings for prizes!
This year I have added a few for fun awards too!
So here are our winners:
"Practice Jar Winner" of a $25 gift card to Target = Miss Ainsley
"Good Grades Jar Winner" of a $25 gift card to Best Buy = Mister Antonio
My dad counted 117 entries in our Practice Jar from 11/1 - 12/16. He determined that those 117 entries equaled 1755 times a song was practiced! And that does not even include the students who didn't meet the practice jar criteria! WOW!
"The Technology Award" goes to the Parke Family for using Skype to share our recital with their family in Sweden!
My dad is the winner of the "Dedication to Renee's Music Award" goes to my dad = 31 years later & he is still sitting through my recitals! ;)
The "Furthest Distance Traveled Award" goes to Miss Kendall's Grandparents who came from Alabama to attend our recital for the 2nd year in a row!
The "Practice Dedication Award" goes to Miss Jaime W. for starting her recital songs first (over summer vacation).
The "Family Support Award" goes to Miss Elizabeth since her big brothers gave her a standing ovation when she finished performing "Believe" from The Polar Express.
The "Worker Bee Family Award" goes to Miss Emily & Miss Abigail's Family! Once again they helped by unlocking & locking the church for us, turning on all the lights, being the sound crew, setting up, cleaning up & working in the kitchen! They spent their whole day working!
Thank you to all of you who helped, volunteered & donated items to make the day a huge success! Thank you to all of the performers for doing your best & working hard all year for this performance! Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents & childcare providers who get their students to lessons, and encourage them to practice! Without all of you, our recital would not have been possible!

Ten Lessons the Arts Teach
Ten Lessons the Arts Teach
by Elliot Eisner, Stanford University
The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.
Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.
The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution
and that questions can have more than one answer.
The arts celebrate multiple perspectives.
One of the large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.
The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving purposes are seldom fixed,
but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.
The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know.
The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.
The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects.
The arts traffic in subtleties.
The arts teach students to think through and within a material.
All art forms employ some means through which images become real.
The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.
When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.
The arts enable us to have experience we can have from no other source
and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.
The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young
what adults believe is important.

The chill in the air...
For me, the fall is my most favorite season! I LOVE the cool evenings, the fall colors, college football and the back to school excitement! I am truly enjoying seeing all of our students back in the piano studio on a regular basis! I am enjoying watching everyone make terrific progress! I am loving the fact that I keep hearing many students (& parents) say that they are on a more regular practice schedule at home!
But fall also means that the winter holiday season is right around the corner!
So in the piano studio it means... preparing for the 4th Annual Winter Holiday Recital!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know, I know, I know - most kids don't even know what they are going to dress up as for Halloween & I am talking to them about their favorite Christmas or Hanukkah songs! For Note-worthy Experiences, it is the biggest event with the biggest audience that we participate in! For me, it is the most fun! I have played the piano for 31 years now & my favorite music to play anytime of the year is Christmas music! So, bear with me as we start to "Deck the Halls" & "Jingle Bells" while sipping warm apple cider & decorate our houses with scarecrows & such!
I used to have a "rule" that I wouldn't "allow" students to start practicing Christmas music until after Halloween. Last year, I was very grateful that I broke my own rule & started a little earlier. After a fall of many students who were ill & my own entire family being ill with mild cases H1N1, MANY piano lessons were missed. So even with many missed lessons all of our pianists were able to do a terrific job at the recital, and at the countless mini recitals that were held in our pianists' homes for their friends & families!
With that said, when you hear a little holiday music so early in the fall - just smile! Oh, and be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, December 18th! You won't want to miss this year's recital!

Piano Tuning
As I type this, I am listening to the beautiful sounds of my beloved piano being tuned!
This is a friendly reminder to those of you who own pianos to have your piano tuned on a regular basis. I have mine tuned twice a year (in the middle of winter & the middle of summer).
Well cared for pianos have a life span of about 50 years. Pianos are made out of materials that are affected by their environment (wood, felt & leather). So a piano will go "out of tune" with the change in heat & humidity.
It is easier to practice on an instrument that is working properly!
Having your piano tuned is a lot like having the oil changed in your car. If you have it done on regular basis, your car will run better & last longer...
If you need information on finding a piano technician - please let me know. I would be more than happy to pass along a few names & numbers!
Ok, I will get off of my soapbox - because I can hardly wait to play my piano! It sounds amazing!
Tuesday, January 19, 2010
I have created a "Dynamic Club" for our piano students!
I want to reward our students who consistently play their music including all of the dynamics, accents, staccatos, legatos, octavas, fermatas, pedaling, etc. in addition to playing the correct notes & rhythms!
I also want to encourage those students who may forget from time to time to become more consistent in playing with all of the added details!
Our students often hear me refer to the notes & rhythms as "the cake" or "the foundation". I will then refer to the dynamics, staccatos, legatos, ritardandos, octavas, fermatas, pedaling, etc. as "the icing" or "the decorations". They certainly can make a good cake better!
So in order for a Note-worthy Experiences Student to become a member of the "Dynamic Club", they must fulfill the following criteria:
- perform their assigned lesson & performance book songs without missing "the icing" for 3 lessons in a row for Ms Renee at the lesson. (This does not include sight reading & performing brand new songs that are going to be assigned for the week.)
- once a student becomes a member, he or she must maintain their status at each lesson. Once a student becomes in eligible, he or she must start over & fulfill the criteria again for 3 lessons in a row.
- ALL students are eligible! Each student is required to perform only the details that are written on their printed music that they have been taught in lessons. For example, a preschooler would not be required to play a song with correct pedaling - however the preschooler would be required to play the song with "piano" or "forte" after it was covered in the lesson.
- Each member will receive a music themed paper to decorate with their name & dates of their accomplishments to hang on the french doors to our piano room.
Good luck!
I hope to see ALL 47 of our students' papers on the doors soon!
Miss Danielle & Miss Ericka
Piano Students who are Cub Scouts...
Matthew, Jimmy, Cole & Grant each created their race cars out of blocks of pinewood & raced them at their respective Pack Pinewood Derby Races.
- Jimmy won the "Best Design Award" from his pack for his car that was a clown!
- Grant won 2nd place at his pack race with his car shaped & decorated like a slice of pepperoni pizza!
- Cole won 1st place in his den race & first place in his pack race! Cole's car was yellow & red and decorated with lightning bolts. This was Cole's first year of participating in the Pinewood Derby!
Both Cole & Grant will move on to their District Pinewood Derby Race! Good luck boys!

Upcoming Events
While everyone is still celebrating the new year, putting away holiday decorations & playing with new gifts.... I am planning ahead for our piano students.
I spoke to the Activity Director of the local nursing home today. She stated that the residents LOVED our winter recital we performed on December 22nd. She would like for us to come back again in March or April. We will work on the details of that later.
The local chapter of the music teacher association that I belong to conducts an annual play a thon at our nearby mall. The money raised from this event benefits students who wish to study music. There are 3 different stages set where musicians perform all weekend long. This year the dates are February 27th & 28th. To date, we have over 15 of our students who have committed to participating! There is still plenty of time to sign up if you are interested! Each student must raise a minimum of $15 in donations in order to participate. I will award the Note-worthy Experiences Student who raises the most money (excluding Grant & Ellie) a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card. Please contact me directly if you would like more information on how to participate in or donate to this worthy cause.
Enjoy the weekend!
